The Magnificent 7 shed $797 billion in a single session as investors stopped rewarding AI spend without workload-level returns. Alphabet's first negative free-cash-flow quarter as a public company — on $45 billion in Q2 capex — made the new rule explicit: more compute is no longer enough. The market is now separating aspirational capex stories from suppliers and asset owners that can show revenue, margins, or utilisation.
The reported price is roughly 7.7× OpenRouter's May valuation. Stripe already processes OpenRouter's payments; owning the routing layer would put it at the billing control point for multi-provider agentic software.
